As a career counselor, I see many clients reach a point in their work lives asking key questions like, “Is this all there is?”  “What else is out there?”  “I don’t know what I want, but I know it is not this?”  A paycheck is simply just not doing it for many hard working adults.  Some say, “I want a job where I can be fulfilled.”

If you have the courage and commitment, entrepreneurship is often the answer.  It’s Fear Factor, a game of the hard choices you make and actions you take.  Fear hold us back from taking the entrepreneurial leap of faith.  Do I want to leave my secure job that I hate for the unknown? Can I really pull this off? If you have a lot, you have a lot to lose, and that’s why it’s natural to do nothing. Choosing not to decide is still a choice.

Not everyone can trade security for self-actualization.  Ask yourself, “Do I have what it takes to assume all the risk for all the reward.”  A venture can move you from employee to self-employed, or as a former client told me, “I don’t want to work for the man.  I want to be the man.”

Since entrepreneurship is a major life change without guarantees, it is one of the most difficult decisions in adulthood.  You let go of the past and all the baggage that holds you back.  Once you become an entrepreneur, you’ll be having so much fun doing what you were meant to do that you’ll never work another day in your life.  Are you doing what you were meant to do?
